I think I'm giving exceptionally big ratings to all albums I review. But, I have no interest in listening to a shitty album many times in order to be able to review it. So, here we go, with one of the best old-school death metal albums I've listened to in quite a while.
From the moment I first looked at the cover of "Portals to the Beyond", one thing was iminent: those guys seriously love Morbid Angel. And that is a good thing, because since Morbid Angel fail to deliver the death metal competency we expect from them, someone needs to fill the gap.
So, with sick lyrics and skill, these guys are technically equal to old Morbid Angel. However, Crucifiction don't simply rip off their heroes, yet they sit down concentrated to the music and produce some of the heaviest riffs around. And not only are the riffs what you'd expect from a band whose main influences seem to be Morbid Angel and Incantation, the band gives them some fresh air and enough space to breathe, with sick death metal breakdowns, reminiscent of Suffocation's, or slow part that immediately bring Obituary to mind. There is also a bit of Malevolent Creation's and Immolation's feeling in there. The good thing is, the band mixes all their influences to deliver some serious death metal, and not some idiotic blend that features an intense stench of stupidity and lacks finesse. They also bear some similarities to their fellow countrymen Dead Congregation, but Crucifiction leans more towards the occult, while the DC guys make stuff mostly about satanism. The production is also above the standards, and you won't miss a single note.
I'm giving it the same rate I gave to "Graves of the Archangels". They certainly are albums of great quality, so I don't have problems with that. However, I believe that "Portals..." does not have many possibilities of being considered a classic in a few years, whereas "Graves..." doeshave them, in fact. That doesn't mean it's not great. It is, and you should definitely check it. Hails! (www.metal-archives.com)
