In 2002, Norwegian funeral doom masters FUNERAL released ‘In Fields of Pestilent Grief’ after seven years of silence.
While the record still carried the trademarks of “the most depressing band in the world,” it was also considered their angriest record due to the extenuating circumstances under which it was written.
The record immortalizes late bassist and songwriter Einar Frederiksen as it was his final work with the band before tragically committing suicide a year after the release.

Season of Mist is now reissuing FUNERAL’s ‘To Mourn Is a Virtue,’ which was originally released in 2011.
This release is the missing link between the band’s seminal albums, ‘Tragedies’ (1995) and ‘In Fields of Pestilent Grief’ (2002).
This compilation album contains a wealth of unreleased demo-recordings as well as nine rare tracks that had been recorded between 1996 and 2004 and remastered in 2010.

Originally released in 1995, ‘Tragedies’ broke boundaries as FUNERAL was among the first and only bands of their genre to recruit a female vocalist, which inspired many of their successors to do the same.

On this album, the band tried the stylistics different from that for the debut album, which featured funeral doom metal: although the leading clean female vocals remained, the music began to tend to doom death metal. However, it is worth mentioning that Funeral remained one of the distinctive and unique bands in the genre.
Two previously unreleased tracks, demo records for the album, with other arrangements and male vocals come as a bonus tracks in this re-release.
The album is issued as a noble six-panel digipack.
