Azimuths to the Otherworld is my tribute to the people known as the Adena and Hopewell, who lived and died in the Ohio River valley from 3000 to 1300 years ago. They are best known for their mounds and other earthworks, some of which are massive and awe-inspiring. Others are barely noticeable blips on the Midwest's landscape; still many others exist only on old maps as they've been systematically destroyed in the name of "progress". My aim with this album is not to dwell in the minutiae of archaeological and anthropological history. I will leave that to the expert historians and authors who have greatly inspired this recording. Instead, I hope to leave the listener with music to ponder what must have been these ancient peoples' quest in life; to send the spirits of their beloved dead on to the next world. This was done in ways we only partially understand, but the clues left behind tell us that their earthen structures were created using primitive but amazingly powerful technology. By using rituals, hallucinogens, astronomy, and a mysterious unit of measurement, they could line up their earthworks to the sun and moon and guide their dead to the "Otherworld". Death, the ultimate migration, is not the only focus of this album. Its broader scope is the spirit of wandering, the seeking of a better place by personal choice or spiritual guidance. This is as true today as it was 2000 years ago, and it is my intention to honor this spirit in modern Native tribes as well as ancient ones in Azimuths to the Otherworld.
