The introduction to the album is done through the title track which uses flutes, the rush of water and tribal-drums. Then guitars and vocals are kicking in and the vocals are croaky and hoarse, and so you will immediately be reminded of a Mayan priest gone wild (or Gollum). They do not really bend the boarders of the genre in the first track as it is played straight forward and the only special thing is a short interlude with a choral chant.

From time to time they spice things up with elements of black’n'roll which sometimes are sliding into something like punk. It would be naive to think that they would only take some elements of genres that are some kind different from black metal and so they have some depressive black metal elements as well in songs like Kay’ay’kimil or Arribando del Mitnal.

The production is well done, as they renounce rawness for a clear, defined sound. The vocals might be too much in the foreground, but that should not really be disturbing. The mixture of black metal, black’n'roll, folk and of course those punk elements is well done too, but there is a lack of variety in the lead riffs from time to time and therefore a lack of variety on the record as well.

Conclusion:

It does not happen very often, that a debut of a band leaves the well trodden path at such a rate as Xulub Mitnal have done it, but it was worth the risk. The vocals might be too stressful for some of you, but they are fitting so well into the body of sound the band is creating. The influence of folk elements is not overdone but well dosed and therefore they have a great impact on the sound. If you are not to scared to try something new, you definitely should risk an ear.
