Newcastle Upon Tyne, Regno Unito, 1979: cantieri navali, miniere di carbone, crisi economica. E rock. Duro, potente, nero, diabolico, la musica piu` estrema mai sentita sinora. I suoi alfieri sono i Venom, i padri putativi del famigerato black metal, ispiratori di una pletora di band destinate a cambiare lo scenario dell’heavy piu` oltranzista.

Questa e` la cronaca di una manciata di anni (1979-1982) in cui i Venom hanno davvero cambiato il mondo – o, almeno, una sua piccola parte – inventando un genere musicale e creando le basi per un intero movimento underground con due album che sono ormai considerati vere e proprie icone da musicisti e appassionati di ogni dove, dal freddo Nord Europa al Sudamerica.

Satanici, incontenibili, malvagi, mitologici, pacchiani, cialtroni, sbruffoni, ruspanti, grezzi, selvaggi e inarrestabili: per molti, Cronos (basso e voce), Abaddon (batteria) e Mantas (chitarra) sono stati tutto questo. Ma hanno soprattutto dato vita a una leggenda, tanto che l’impronta dei loro dischi Welcome To Hell e Black Metal, cosi` come della loro estetica eccessiva a base di cuoio, borchie e catene, e` ormai parte integrante del DNA del metal.

La storia dei primi anni dei Venom e` un gigantesco calderone di contraddizioni, versioni divergenti e pura epica heavy. In pratica, la materia con cui si forgiano i racconti piu` affascinanti, quelli che ti cambiano la vita. E i Venom hanno rivoluzionato la vita di molti.
