Peisithanatos holds reference to a Cyrenaic philosopher who wrote a book called Death by starvation, wherein the main character starves himself, arguing to a friend that death is more desirable than life. It describes how human misery can be so overpowering, that it can drive people to kill themselves; this brought the author the surname Peisithanatos, meaning Death-persuader.
