Ironically enough, I am feeling down again when I finally drew the conclusion that this EP deserves the physical appreciation, in the form of a decent review. Fornicatus has been an outstanding representation of Finnish black metal since 2006, during their years of progression they have created a blend of fine melancholy and a characteristic and sharp depressive vibe, which constantly gives them an expressive sound and keeps them special in the row of nowadays woeful black metal acts.
The 'Down Again' EP features two songs of an absolute grief-stricken conception; it is slightly more than eleven minutes of bleakness and makes a short musical description of present days' emotional breakdowns. Compared to their previous full-length, 'Omnium Animalis Terminus', this EP bears a warmer sound, but continues to radiate the same sorrow and draws the listener back into the vicious circle of depression. The first heavily crushing song, bearing the same title as the EP, is a dragging journey through the feeling of being stuck somewhere between two mindsets. Melancholy lurks beneath the layers of surprisingly thick guitars and clear instruments, which eventually mark both songs, however the beginning simply strikes on the dedicated listener. The second piece, 'Longing For Cold', starts off with eerie piano melodies, then evolves into a more monotonous black metal track, still cold and given up. All in all, the compositions are very well-written and lack every unnecessary additions. Literally, Morbid's vocals and lyrics depict a gruesome truth about the present; the inevitable result of futility and uncertainty caused by the continous struggle in present life - the wish to get away.
Fornicatus mean every word they lay down, mean every chord they play and honestly stream the isolation; therefore the atmosphere of being a witness to this dead and careless world's existence resulted in this EP, as an evident for all of us who are concerned. Highly recommended. (www.metal-archives.com)
