"Key to a Vanishing Future" is an intended departure from the sounds explored throughout the band's back catalog, while still retaining characteristics inherent to Falls of Rauros. Never content to make the same album twice, the group has once again invited new influences into their aesthetic, this time including more explicit nods to death metal and prog rock while still drilling deeper into the black metal and North American folk-rock that makes up their core sound. This is once again their heaviest album to date, as well as their most technically demanding. The album was recorded by the band themselves in their rehearsal space in late 2020/early 2021, befitting of the natural and organic sound pursued for the album, while mixing and mastering duties were handled by Colin Marston. On “Blessings of Amurdad” (Amurdad translating to immortality in Middle Persian), Dakhma abducts listeners to a distant, foreign land and dares to journey to a time long ago, when desert mystics and noble empires still strode proudly through ancient Persia. Thematically, “Blessings of Amurdad” explores the complex relationship between mortality and immortality in Zoroastrianism, based mainly on key passages of the ancient text of the Gathas. In particular, the band manages to provide a compelling narrative detailing perceived jealousies expressed by mortals towards the divine and vice versa. These themes are captured in the compelling cover artwork, painted by the inimitable Babar Moghal, depicting an ancient tower of silence, seemingly forgotten and decaying but nevertheless exuding a sense of foreboding and nobility, hinting at the divine.
Conceptually, "Les nuits de Gethsémani" explores three pictures of a man stepping into the night, with bare feet, on the Mount of Olives. The three movements showcase a staggering ability to convey emotion through the power of composition, as elements of myth, sin, death, sun, and blood are juxtaposed to form an engrossing whole. Précieux Sang is interested in religious sentiment, tragedy, and abjection. Rejecting the more widespread fascination of their contemporaries with the occult, Précieux Sang is more interested in the exoteric aspect of religious experience: the Sacred rather than the secret. Considering that this is the band's first release, there is an impressive depth to the songwriting on display, with each track flowing effortlessly from passages of high-paced, frenetic yet never out of control chord based riffing to gargantuan mid-tempo sections as well as calmer, meditative sections, with a highly emotive vocal performance perfectly complimenting the glorious melodic shifts in the guitars throughout.
The production of "Les nuits de Gethsémani" is of particular note, with mixing and mastering duties handled by Xavier Tehom in March 2021 in Montréal, these songs sound incredibly clear and dynamic, without losing the passion and essence of the performances in plastic studio trickery. The sonic force on display in these three tracks is something to behold, offering a rich texture that showcases these three songs in a way complimenting the music and certainly warranting repeated listens

This is all the more impressive as much of the material seems purposefully composed at a more mid-tempo, allowing for these songs to be embellished with stunning details in melody, primarily provided by guitars, vocal arrangements, effective ambient sections as well as incredibly precise and deep percussion work. Switzerland's Tardigrada have emerged as one of the leading purveyors of truly immersive, atmospheric extreme metal music. With members based in Basel and Zürich, the band's demo "Widrstand" provides a glimpse into the sonic seeds that would fully grow into their full-length releases.
On "Widrstand", Tardigrada presents a rawer sound that is no less capable of gripping listeners with its keen sense for melody than the band's more accomplished later works. Due to "Widrstand" no longer being available in its original, strictly limited release run, it is long overdue for a re-release. On their debut album "Aegis", FLAME, DEAR FLAME have erected a truly distinct sound, characterized by the stirring performance of vocalist Maren Lemke, whose simultaneously airy yet powerful voice fuses with the memorable riff craft on display to create 7 towering tracks that are sure to capture the ears of listeners eager to hear an innovative take on a genre that too often conforms to stereotypes.
"Aegis" is a work thematically divided into two parts. The first part, entitled "The Millennial Heartbeat", details the genesis of the ocean and the thanatography of the land, a testimony of the forces of nature and its frailty alike, performed in three movements and featuring a classical epic doom approach, rife with gargantuan riffs and percussion as well as soaring clean vocals, yet interspersed with thoughtfully placed and paced clean sections. Serving as a contrasting and complementary second part of the album, "The Wolves and the Prioress" consists of four movements focusing more on acoustic folk elements, further enriching FLAME, DEAR FLAME's engrossing sound, and details the story of a feral child that falls into the custody of a sage prioress.
All of these elements result in a unique combination of righteous doom and subtle, yet noble acoustic folk. Each track is accompanied by a visual representation composed by Karmazid. The culmination of the album’s visuals is its stark cover artwork, laden with elegant symbolism in rich detail, created by Kodex Barbaricus.
