Not everything goes in death metal, and Hexorcist keep a closed mind when it comes to the Metal of Death. For them, the archaic ways of Morbid Angel, Necrovore, Sarcofago, Death, Incubus,, Possessed, Vital Remains, Slayer and Peru's Mortem do not need to be messed with, only upheld, and uphold Hexorcist do here. Official reissue of the debut full-length, originally released in 2019, by this U.S. band. Based in Minneapolis, Nothingness spew forth a brand of Death Metal that features crushing Death/Doom Metal sections that help build up a tense atmosphere, with a permanent focus on -and reverence to- the riff, and including a wide array of influences, such as Morbid Angel, Spectral Voice, Justin Broadrick, Rippikoulu, Incantation, Convulsing, Winterfylleth, Primitive Man, Suffocation and Profanatica. Aiming for universal heaviness filtered through the lens of Death Metal, and performed with respect for the history of extreme music, Nothingness are on a mission to forge a sound rooted in the ancient ways, yet also embracing more recent takes and experimentations; a sound that doesn't need to be defined by rigid genres, whose only goal is to be honest and heavy, and honestly just heavy. If anything, Nothingness is Death.
The highly anticipated debut full-length by this U.S. band. Hailing from San Diego, California, Conjureth formed in 2018 with the goal of continuing the traditions forged by the originators of Death Metal. Indeed, they did that with two demos in 2020, "Foul Formations" and "The Levitation Manifest". That the members do or have done time in such bands as Encoffination, VoidCeremony and Ghoulgotha, among many others, is a moot point; Conjureth are equally Death Metal, if not more so, but reside in their own ancient sphere altogether. Evidence of such can be found with their debut album, "Majestic Dissolve". Taking influence via everything from Florida to Finland, the power-trio steamroll their way through late 80's-inspired filth. There was a short time when Death Metal wasn't primarily full of blastbeats, caveman riffs, ultra-low-tuned guitars and super-guttural vocals. Sadly, this era was fairly short-lived, but we all know how it spawned some of the most classic material the genre has ever seen. As brazenly displayed by the 10 songs comprising "Majestic Dissolve", Conjureth slots in that bygone age of 1986-to-1989-style Death Metal with a heaping portion of Thrash Metal riffing and a dash of the technical side of things that would be unearthed a few years later. It's both "by the books" and also bent, as the weird & eerie title of "Majestic Dissolve" suggests, not to mention its mesmerizing cover art courtesy of Erskine Designs. Put simply, Conjureth is a band that celebrates the past giving birth to the future. Girded in a scything mix & mastering courtesy of Javier Felez at Moontower Studios, "Majestic Dissolve" is modern proof that death is just the beginning!
A CD that compiles everything this Italo/Romanian project has released so far, namely the "4-Track Promo Tape" demo (2020) and the "Sickening Cadaveric Perversion" EP (2020). Larvae was belched forth by Lucilia Sericata (nickname for Vitamaria, ex-Lurking Terror from Rome), an Italian sicko that moved to Bucharest four years ago. The insatiable craving to compose and write lyrics was barely endurable, until the first official rehearsal, featuring Disgusting Dennis on bass and drums, finally took place in December 2019. Lucilia sure as hell knew what she wanted to do regarding lyrical themes, riffs, samples and the reeking atmosphere to enshroud the listener in, so it didn't take long until the band recorded and self-produced the "4-Track Promo Tape" demo in their rehearsal room, in March 2020. The global pandemic and the subsequent lockdown didn't prevent Lucilia from writing new music, and the "Sickening Cadaveric Perversion" EP was spilled over like gory grume in November 2020. LARVAE's main purpose is not to craft any kind of technical or easy-listening tunes, but to infect the listener with the most vile and most atrocious visions to be found on Lucilia's mind, by creating some über-morbid Death/Doom Metal that's so utterly gross and filthy that it almost feels like slo-mo Goregrind. LARVAE, indeed, create life from the dead, and (dis)gracefully bathe in the sullen thoughts that consume decaying souls from the inside.
A CD that compiles everything this French band has released so far, namely the "Putrefiance" demo (2018) and the "Left to Decay" EP (2020). "Let's play Death Metal". That's how it all started by mid 2017, when two Death Metal freaks joined forces with a Crust/Punk drummer to summon the spirit of old school, raw 'n' rotten Death Metal with a Punk vibe, inspired by icons of yore such as Autopsy, Master, Repulsion and Obituary. In July 2018, they entered Cripple Room Studio and recorded 7 original songs, plus an Onslaught cover. It was a live recording. The engineer worked fast, and everything was mixed and mastered the following week. Shortly after, they decided to gain a little exposure by putting the demo on the web. Small labels reached out to them, asking for a repress of the demo, and some great reviews spawned here and there. November 2019 came, and they went back to Cripple Room Studio to record the "Left to Decay" EP. There was a label that was supposed to put it out, but it turned out to be a total disaster. The release was delayed again and again. On top of that, the pandemic arrived in 2020 and that meant no rehearsals and no gigs. So, more than a year after the recording, they decided to self-release the EP on tape (it would be repressed on pro-tape later on). Next step for Putrefiance to take will be to start the recording of a full-length that will also be released through Memento Mori by mid/late 2022.
The highly anticipated 4th full-length by this Greek band. Hailing from Athens, the band was initiated by Giannis Grim (Carnal Dread, Humanity Zero, Death Trap, Vultur) and George Wolf (Forced In, Dismal Chant, Vultur) when Carnal Dread and Forced In shared the bill at a local show back in the grip of winter of 2012. Both musicians being real zealots of what Death Metal was known for back in the late 80's and the early 90's -in other words, no tech wankery and no crystal-clear production- they rapidly entered the studio just to start jamming, and ultimately gave birth to Ectoplasma. Shortly after, the "Everlasting Deathreign" demo was discharged upon mankind, granting the band some following among diehard fans of unpolished Death Metal. On subsequent releases (the "Spitting Coffins" debut full-length and the split tape with Hatevomit), the band kept on perfecting their craft and obtaining more adherents of their underground creed, reaching a more mature sound by the time the "Skeletal Lifeforms" EP was released in late 2016 (tape format) / early 2017 (CD format), in which Ectoplasma shamelessly manifested their devotion to muddy, organic, disgusting, bone-breaking and rotten-to-the-core Death Metal influenced by the early offerings of bands such as Autopsy, Baphomet, Asphyx, Morta Skuld, Grave, Demigod, Gutted, Death and Judecca, only with their own personal twist. With the addition of Dion K. Alastor (Vultur) on guitars and Giannis Botsis (Embrace of Thorns, Thou Art Lord) on drums, it was with their sophomore full-length, 2018's "Cavern of Foul Unbeings" -released to international acclaim by Memento Mori, the band's current label home- that Ectoplasma kicked their crusade against inane, overproduced "Death Metal" into overdrive. Reeking of the same characteristic grime and decrepitude of that album, the band's third, absolutely gutsfucking full-length, 2019's "White-Eyed Trance", saw Ectoplasma entering concept-album territory, but only in lyrical concept, as the musical side of the album stayed true to their their now-signature world-eating sound. Justifiably so, "White-Eyed Trance" reaped international acclaim as an unabashed statement of classic Death Metal songwriting. Naturally, 2020 also threw the world of Ectoplasma into upheaval, as their lineup was pared back to the duo of founder Giannis Grim on vocals & bass and guitarist/drummer Dimitris Sakkas, who holds a wealth of experience in the Metal underground, currently maintaining the bands Inhibitions, Humanity Zero and Slough of Despair, among many, many others. Thankfully, the latter is a fine fit for Ectoplasma, as the resultant "Inferna Kabbalah" is arguably the band's most punishing record yet. It's a curious balance -the execution sounds razor-sharp and precise when placed within such a soundfield, with the more frequent bouts of speed given extra devastation and the breakdowns even more so- but one that pays off in spades, as their songwriting continues to thrive within strictly traditional parameters, and this relative "refinement" only makes it that much more powerful. Thus, it's not unreasonable to view "Inferna Kabbalah" in the same headspace as Bolt Thrower's righteous "...For Victory", except Ectoplasma surely have their own tank-treaded crush! The astonishing 2nd full-length by this Mexican band. Hailing from the vast Death Metal hotbed of Mexico, Ravenous Death feature current members of such other bands as Remains, Demonic Manifestation and Death's Forsaken. The band's embryo was brought forth in 2016 during the recording of Remains' 3rd full-length in Mexico City, when vocalist/guitar player Miguel Angel and drummer Esteban Salcedo toyed with the idea of creating a Death Metal band influenced by Vomitory, Torture Division and the likes. Later on, both musicians shared their vision with lead guitarist Enrique Fray, and the three of them agreed to push the idea forward and carry it out as a side-project due to the commitments they all had with their main bands. Soon after, Enrique and Miguel Angel began writing songs for the newborn abomination, and the three members decided to name the band after a Vomitory song titled "The Ravenous Dead". Fast forward to October 2016, and the recording of Ravenous Death's debut demo/EP, "Ominous Deathcult", is finalized (although not released as a Bandcamp download until March 2017), including five songs chock full of rotting maliciousness that showed great poise in combining blasting brutality, crushing heaviness, somber ambience and fierce intensity, with the lyrical themes revolving around death, occultism, blasphemy and other classic topics of the olden Metal of Death. On May 13th, 2017, the band made their first live performance in the city of Guadalajara. For this occasion, two new members were recruited -namely, bass player Alejandro Mendez and guitarist Diego Gomez- leaving Miguel Angel on vocal duties alone. After the excellent crowd response, both Alejandro and Diego joined the band as official members. Emboldened by this patient momentum, and featuring new vocalist Victor Mercado, Ravenous Death at last released their debut album, 2019's "Chapters of an Evil Transition", courtesy of Memento Mori. Aptly titled, "Chapters of an Evil Transition" indeed displayed the band's transition into an evil Death Metal juggernaut. The album found great favor among the Death Metal faithful, for it absolutely bled the molten-yet-mildewed essence of 90's Metal of Death. Now Ravenous Death are back to fuck fashion and especially fickle tastes with the longer and stronger "Visions from the Netherworld". Not for nothing is the album titled as such: "Visions from the Netherworld" is an epic 63 minutes, and conveys a moodiness perfectly suited to these slicing 'n' sluicing songs. The atmosphere is hideous, evil as ever but without any cloying "cavernous" touches; the production is professional and powerful, skillfully balancing gleam and grime; the leads are more prominent, and blackened to a crisp; and the songwriting itself twists and turns and twists some more, opening infinite labyrinths but always with a (crooked) direction in sight. Whereas the previous full-length displayed trace elements of Mexican forebears Shub Niggurath as well as Sadistic Intent, Seance, old Grave, 90's Immolation, 90's Vader, Demigod and Vomitory, here do Ravenous Death strike upon new-yet-old ground that can only be qualified as Ominous Rotten Death Metal. And as its epic length suggests, "Visions from the Netherworld" is indeed a concept album as always; the cover art, once again by the masterful Mörtuus, represents all the twisted visions that the band have about Hell, the underworld, punishment, etc. Enclosed in era-authentic mastering courtesy of Loïc Fontaine at Krucyator Studio (France), Ravenous Death have eclipsed their momentous debut with their "Visions from the Netherworld"!

This double CD set is a special release to celebrate the band's 35th anniversary, and contains all the demos + rarities by this seminal Dutch Thrash/Death Metal band. "Blind Obedience" was originally included in the band's first demo, "Speed Kills" (1984), and this is a special re-recorded version from 2019, featuring former guitar player Remco de Maaijer as guest musician.
