And what a spell FUNERAL THRONE harness here, a heaving mass of palpably physical energy yet one brimming with harrowing, hypnotic intent. Many of the song titles across Threshold - "Resurrection," "Through Transforming Fire," "Hypnotic Coils," and "Vessel" among them - paint a vivid picture of its contents; in fact, even the title of Threshold itself speaks volumes about the simultaneous ascent/descent the band undertake.

Although literally emerging from nothingness earlier this year, SHRINE OF INSANABILIS are no mere acolytes, instead evincing a master's knowledge across their debut album. Never more aptly titled, Disciples of the Void comprises six testimonies to the fiery aspiration for enlightenment through inconceivable nothingness. These testimonies are also manifested into this world by their corresponding sigils. SHRINE OF INSANABILIS vividly portray these visions through a heaving mass of obsidian black metal, forever rising and falling, surging and merging, offering glimpses of glory and valleys of despair in equal measure.

Originally hailing from New Zealand but later relocating to Scotland, BARSHASKETH have been patiently perfecting their bewitching craft these past five years, away from prying eyes but with sights set on diabolical fullmoon mysticism. Theirs is a sound that resonates with the stripped-bare, nightsky purity of second-wave black metal, from the ancient days when black metal was truly a cult for criminals and diehards. Ophidian Henosis is BARSHASKETH's grandest distillation of these eldritch energies yet. At once familiar and foreign, Ophidian Henosis explodes forth with cryogenic violence and fog-drenched atmosphere, arcing about with subtle shifts in texture and twists in composition, maintaining a headspace of otherworldly splendour whilst never lingering too long in a monochromatic mire. For however committed to purist black metal BARSHASKETH may be, their journey across Ophidian Henosis is a multi-hued one, recalling the early days of Sacramentum, Kvist, Setherial, and Isvind among others - in other words, the spectral darkness of the mid-1990s - and brimming with a passion and poignancy that can only come from the most obsidian of souls.

The Austrian black metal outfit Amestigon is stream all of "Thier," the group's new album released last week via W.T.C. Productions.
A sprawling, wholly intoxicating mass of metaphysical might and mystical atmosphere, "Thier" comprises four vast, void-dwelling expanses of obsidian sound, with each track in the double digits and the title track itself topping nearly 20 minutes.
