POMBAGIRA

The band's sixth album since their inception in 2007, Flesh Throne Press sees Pombagira expanding on themes in their previous double-album release, Maleficia Lamiah. Recorded in July 2014 across two intense weeks, the band put down over 80 minutes of material, all of which will be made available on double-CD.

I am halfway through the sooooo long song of the newest ‘Iconoclast Dream’ by UK doomers Pombagira, and mind you that is still over twenty-one minutes far in the track, and I am so tormented by those vocals! You simply cannot imagine how hard it is to believe that plastic fake scream, that wanna-be-evil voice or that bootlegged growling of the title or the rest of the lyrics. It just kills me because I was quite enthusiastic about their ’last effort’, but this over forty minute long song is nothing more than several ideas and re-used riffs and arrangements, sometimes quite good ones that allow the listener a break, I must admit. It just is like everything is hammered in place like a child does with missing or wrong pieces of a puzzle and a plastic sucked and chewed on tool. Musically not the best around, almost hurting, but this is a miss, a no-go… I have expected more for sure but they simply did not deliver.

Due brani per 52 minuti di musica: se non è un record, certo ci va molto vicino. Solo due generi di gruppi potrebbero fare una cosa del genere: quelli black depressivi e quelli sludge doom. La band albionica rientra nella seconda categoria e, come a suo tempo i Teeth Of Lion Rule The Divine, vuole annichilire i propri ascoltatori con una colata di pece ardente, tanto pesanti, oscuri e grumosi appaiono i riff vomitati da questo terzetto albionico. Le basi sono, ovviamente, sabbathiane, il che significa che la matrice è essenzialmente heavy/doom con sfumature bluesy, il tutto calato in quel contesto sporco, slabbrato e psichedelico che ha fatto la fortuna di gente come Eyehategod e Electric Wizard. I loro riferimenti culturali, esoterici e satanici, sono un chiaro rimando alle origini del genere, quando ancora il metallo satanico non era quello dei DarkThrone bensì quello dei Black Sabbath e dei Pagan Altar, il che conferisce al disco un feeling ancora più morboso. Certo, si tratta sempre di due brani, sinceramente anche un po' troppo stiracchiati: aldilà del minutaggio, questi due pezzi non costituiscono veramente un full-length, e forse sarebbe stato meglio fare come nel loro disco di debutto, in cui venivano spalmati cinque brani in due dischi. Un lavoro con tante potenzialità, ma non troppo concreto.
