Brendan Auld’s signature style, blending death metal with an oppressive and obscure black metal vibe takes a turn towards the lands of grindcore, both musically and conceptually.

Toxic Current is the new studio album by the multi-instrumentalist from Brisbane, and it comes with two covers from Australian grind and hardcore bands, Agents Of Abhorrence and The Fevered. To those familiar with Auld’s work, particularly Snorlax, these influences have always been part of his art, but never to such a clear extent. 

Ancient Future Black Metal Meets Blackened Psychedelia… Mysterious UK-US experimental black metal trio Qasu announce their debut album A Bleak King Cometh, co-released via Phantom Limb & extreme-metal tastemakers Apocalyptic Witchcraft. Described by the band as “ancient future black metal,” the upcoming record (out on 30th January, 2026) delivers a crushing and otherworldly sound that fuses blackened psychedelia, occult techno, and warped sound design into a singular, terrifying vision.

Formed by members of “somewhat known” existing acts, Qasu hit an immediate and confident stride of finessed songwriting on their debut release. Its riffs are cataclysmic, whether agonisingly slow or razor sharp; its blastbeats are breakneck and meaty; its vocals are howled with torturous passion; its mythology is crafted with narrative totality…

Finnish death metal 7" box set series to be released via Svart Records - Part I with Abhorrence, Disgrace & Messiah Paratroops out in April

This is part of the story of the birth of early Finnish death metal. The late ’80s and early ’90s were a time when underground extreme metal flourished, and the main centrifugal force that got bands known globally was tape trading. Influences spread like a disease, and young, emerging death metal groups were eager to be more brutal than the next. Lack of money meant that studios couldn’t be booked for weeks, so the first logical release for starting bands was usually a self-released demo tape or a seven-inch vinyl, where they could squeeze in two to four tracks.

Even though we are talking about Finnish death metal here, the American record label Seraphic Decay, run by Steve O’Bannon, plays an important role in this story. It was the label that originally released the first 7” records for three Finnish bands: Disgrace's Debts of God (1990), Abhorrence's Abhorrence (1990) — the band that later morphed into Amorphis — and Messiah Paratroops' The Past (1992).
