The harbinger of southern Swedish melancholy has returned! Erik Gärdefors, the mastermind behind GRIFT, finally invites you to take part of his enthralling debut album, “Syner”. The combination of stripped-down metal music and traditional folk music has since the beginning been the hallmark of GRIFT, and so it continues. To put the listener in the right mood and to make the material more varied, Erik has this time chosen to implement harmonium and lap steel to his music. The lyrics are still highly influenced by predominantly Swedish poets and artists, and are still mostly about existential questions and the feeling of always being a nomad wandering aimlessly. So, folks! Let yourself be carried away, and for a short moment become a stranger lost in a state of uncertain homelessness.
"Syner" comes in a clean and elegant digisleeve with a 16 page booklet decorated with photos and drawings by Erik of Grift. All motives are captured in the environments of the small mountain Kinnekulle – the mountain that constantly recur and affect Grift in different ways.
Built upon a concept stained with inspiration drawn from great elder poets like Johannes Edfelt, Pär Lagerkvist & Dan Andersson among others GRIFT delivers rugged, hackneyed & melancholic metal in a way most pleasant. Nordvis abides.
The new album, "Arvet" (“The Heritage”) continues where "Syner" left off. Once again, Erik has struggled with the endless big questions that sensitive people have always struggled with and have tried to express. From the small and seemingly insignificant in every human being, to something that always pulsates and becomes meaningful in some way; beyond the meadows and the forests.
The heritage we carry within us is something we never can escape from. An inheritance is something that characterizes every individual in often paradoxical ways. It may be a social heritage, a biological heritage, a religious heritage, etc. With this album Grift wants to illuminate the always ongoing journey from the small safe place in each mans heart to the great unforeseen life. We often think that everything is going to shape from scratch to something unique. But sooner or later we understand our vulnerabilities and falls back to what we have inherited since we were innocent children.
AFTONKLANG is a live recording from the solo concert by GRIFT at Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum, Oslo, September 16, 2018. This concert is one of several unique solo concerts GRIFT made during the past two years. The Mausoleum with it’s fantastic acoustics, were a single tone lasts for 15 seconds, turned out to catch the essence of GRIFT perfectly. Recorded only with three condenser microphones and no back-line, this live LP is a must listen for everyone into stripped down, fragile and melancholic folk music.
