"... 1996's Triarchy of the Lost Lovers is RC's triumph and masterpiece. It is among the best extreme metal albums every made. Each song strikes a different chord inside the listener, making each song unique in delivery, yet the songs reign in the realm of the album. The drums especially the snare drum hit with a clear resonance. Though the guitars are low tuned for the Death/Black metal genre, they emit sound clearly and in the perfect space inside the open air of the album's production. At times Sakis nearly whispers and can be heard just as well as the loudest guitar. Though Rotting Christ are unquestionably an Extreme Metal group, playing the heaviest on Triarchy is not a primary goal, and hardly a secondary goal. The combination of distinctly heard guitar riffs that have the perfect tone and overdrive and the impeccable melody and sublime guitar harmony throughout makes the album pace at a nearly enchanting speed. Triarchy is one of the best extreme metal albums, and makes the case that this extreme genre of rock can not only be uncompromisingly heavy and brutal, but also uncompromisingly beautiful and artistic...."

Rotting Christ formed in 1988. The band's early demo recordings contained Grindcore elements that quickly evolved into something altogether darker. Spearheaded by brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis, Rotting Christ have remained one of the most respected forces in the Black Metal scene since their debut release Passage To Arcturo. The band's legacy was cemented further by the genre classic follow-up Thy Mighty Contract.
Passage To Arcturo was the band’s debut studio offering and was originally released in 1991. Featuring a lo-fi raw take on Black Metal, Rotting Christ also masterfully wove some of their trademark atmosphere and sombre melodies with occult themes to create something altogether unique for the time, with the band over the years becoming one of the enduring premier staples of the whole Black Metal genre.

Guitarist / vocalist Sakis Tolis and brother Themis on drums achieve a perfect balance of amalgamating their classic and unique style of riffing and rhythm with exciting new elements sprinkled in to keep their material exciting and fresh. Carefully chosen guests are being added for better effect, not name dropping such as the spoken words of Nick Holmes (PARADISE LOST) on "A Voice Like Thunder" or SAMAEL's Vorph mesmerizingly quoting from Charles Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs Du Mal" throughout the song "Les Litanies De Satan". The 2-CD set 'Their Greatest Spells' takes a retrospective look at the cult Greek band's fascinating musical development by picking a select choice of key tracks covering the many facets of ROTTING CHRIST. With such a massive catalogue, a "best of" compilation will always lead to controversy about certain additions as well as omissions from the final list, but the involvement of frontman Sakis Tolis himself in this difficult task ensures that the result is at least relevant.
