In many ways, AUTUMN`S DAWN in general and Gone in particular can be seen as a more refined version of Grey Waters, a short-lived yet celebrated band of Sorrow; in other ways, one can imagine Sentenced and Mono squaring off with Germ and Austere. Any way you describe it, Gone is the end...and the beginning.

This split record was originally published on CD already back in 2008, though all the time planned for a proper vinyl release between Eisenwald and Eternity Records, "Bleak" never archived the fame it belongs. Now the wait is finally over and we are more than proud to present this double lp, what at the same time became maybe the most elaborate record made under the hammer ! Not only that the Vinyl has a re-arranged layout and a very nice package, to top all, the Isolation vocals have been new recorded and improved, specifically for this new pressing under analogue platter !

Austere continued in its developement and delivered stronger songs, developing even more from what could be heard on the debut and split material with lyrinx, music with a deep melancholic longing but already incorporation clean vocals as well. Isolation are offering some very moody and maybe experimental tracks, developing more and more into an own identity. Overall this split still stands for tracks of bleak, cold and sorrowful moments ! Call it Dark Metal, Depressive or Melancholic or whatever Metal, it just delivers an excellent atmosphere !

Cresce la scena black metal californiana. Lo si percepisce dalle prime battute del debut album degli Ordo Obsidium, realtà che pare non avere alle spalle chissà quale gavetta, ma che con questo “Orbis Tertius” è già in grado di offrire una proposta di una certa personalità, resa ulteriormente solida dalla buona qualità del suono del disco, particolare non secondario in un genere come quello in questione, che fa dell’atmosfera una sua caratteristica imprescindibile. Parte “Nequaquam Vacuum” e un muro di suono avvolgente riempie lo spazio: la band sembra voler porsi a metà strada tra scuola “depressive” black metal e riflessioni doom, mostrando una spiccata tendenza a muoversi su ritmiche blande e dare alle linee vocali un carattere tormentato, ideale per esaltare i tristi intrecci delle chitarre. In particolare, è la conclusiva “By His Unflinching Hand” a regalare gli spunti migliori: “ricami” di chitarra acustica vengono egregiamente sovrapposti a rasoiate elettriche e la collera black viene traghettata all’interno delle roboanti strutture del doom metal più funereo, per un risultato finale potenzialmente capace di appagare sia gli amanti dell’atmosfera, sia chi pretende sempre e comunque un minimo di tensione in lavori come questo. Inoltre, pur non presentando mai passaggi propriamente ammiccanti – punto di forza dei nostri Forgotten Tomb, ad esempio – gli Ordo Obsidium hanno il pregio di riuscire sempre a rendersi conto quando è il caso di dare al brano una sferzata di energia o di cambiare ritmo: in questo modo, anche se le trame non possono essere assolutamente definite “orecchiabili”, le composizioni danno costantemente l’idea di essere “vive” e mantengono saldo l’interesse dell’ascoltatore. Dal canto nostro, forse avremmo tolto qualche coda black un po’ troppo imperiosa, tuttavia “Orbis Tertius” rimane un disco da scoprire, che, per essere un debutto, ha tanto da offrire e poco da farsi perdonare.

Aurvandil play a kind of mid-paced, trancey Black Metal with a lot of haunting melodies and atmosphere. There is more than a slight similarity to Agalloch with the brooding soundscapes and the muted sound to the guitars that turns them into more a melodic than rhythm instrument. Acoustic breaks, moody epic compositions, and vocals mixed low so they sound like they are coming from far away or deep inside the frozen Earth. While none of the compositions really transcends and becomes great, this is a very solid and enjoyable disc with no weak points or breaks in the mood. Solid, but not really exciting.

Preceded by a couple of demos in 2006, an EP in 2007 and a split with Australian black metallers Austere in 2008, this is the first full length from Germany's Isolation. Closing A Circle is melancholic black metal that has evolved out of the anger, chaos, and bleak depression usually associated with the genre into a fusion with the broad horizons and deserted landscapes of bands such as Isis and Neurosis. The black element has been relegated to a subsidiary role to allow the spaces between the rage and futility to be fully explored. It's rough, it's raw, it's melancholic, but the songs feel too laboured, as if rehearsed – or even under-rehearsed – to the point of a precision that removes anything organic from them. This is the one downfall in the production. Another is the performances. The ambitious guitar work, though good, is limited in its scope, chiefly relying on formulaic patterns and rhythmic rigidity. The bass-lines are too rigid, as if played by someone unfamiliar with the nuances of the instrument and so unable to bring to the songs the substance and fluidity they need. And its prominence in the mix taints the songs, and the album for that matter. The vocals are, at times, strained. And together with the heavy-handed drums, they pull the compositions apart.

There is something compelling about the songs, and the music demands a level of indulgence that does bring reward. Closing A Circle is melodic and dynamic, focussed and expansive, and what is here hints at what could be great promise for the future of this band. They need to lock themselves in a rehearsal space, play the songs over and over and over and explore the compositions and breathe life (or death, even) into each aspect of what are, largely, good compositions and then draw that live feel into the studio. Maybe their next effort will be what this should have been.
