Musically, Cauchemar often recall the kind of doomy British heavy metal that bands like Pagan Altar and Witchfinder General perfected in the late ’70s and early ’80s, while their faster moments harken back to the proto speed metal sound of bands like Acid. The melodies are simple and catchy but also carry a certain gothic atmosphere that brings to mind things like ruined medieval castles, misty moors and dank lightless dungeons.

Their first release, “La vierge noire” MLP, includes 5 songs of ancient metal darkness. The warm, unpolished production and the eerie atmosphere will transport you to the darkest parts of antique cemeteries. Unholy Crucifix perfectly exemplify the nature of a band segregating its demo material from its album material and realizing the inherent character of each as different tools within a vast arsenal. Fans of the band’s earlier, more chaotic work, will be satisfied by the ferocity of the tracks here, while those seeking a more comprehensible and versatile approach will find this release equally satisfying. Adding to the atmosphere of this album is the hallucinatory and demonic vision of Croatian artist Marko Marov whose detailed and ornately horrific pen and ink style perfectly complements the sound of the record.

Knelt Rote has emerged over the past few years as something of an anomaly in the underground. While the band’s earliest work veered heavily into Grindcore, the band’s style has broadened considerably over the past several releases as the band has fleshed out the composition of its tracks and added more elements of Death and Black metal into its body of work. Listening to the band’s third full-length, “Trespass,” it is clear that Knelt Rote executes these more nuanced strains of extreme metal with a rare sense of precision and focus. What further separates Knelt Rote from its peers is the heavy Harsh Noise influence that the band incorporates into its work adding additional layers of depth and dimension.

Bands emerging at this stage are almost certainly influenced by Black, Death, and Thrash metal in relatively equal parts in addition to drawing influence from genres outside the traditional spectrum of metal. This amorphous state, has led many bands to retreat into strict rehashing of formulaic retro approaches. Katechon, however, embraces the entropic merging of stylistic and aesthetic projections from the various branches of the genre and beyond.

LOGOS is an oppositional counterpart both in musical form and ideological conception. Nine pummeling tracks focus on attack, pulsing with hammering fecundity. Antagonistic and aggressive, the album depicts the force of primal creation turning on itself in a meditation on destruction and total death.

Over the past two decades, Thou Art Lord has released just a handful of albums. Veterans and pioneers of the Greek Black Metal scene, the current line up consists of members previously or currently involved in such seminal projects as Necromantia, Rotting Christ, Mortify, Nergal, and many others. On this new album, entitled “The Regal Pulse of Lucifer,” Thou Art Lord resurrect the rich atmosphere and occult ideology for which the band has been heralded through the years. Indeed, this album may be the most archetypal Greek Black Metal album released by any band in many years.
