Ole Alexander Halstensgård, Kristoffer Rygg, Tore Ylwizaker and Stian Westerhus – went full isolation in their studio below the haunted hill, fantasizing about bygone nights of slasher, exploitation, and giallo. Three or four months went by, the band returned to the living, and sent their radiophonic workshop experiments off to the Dogs of Doom, France, where friend and fellow film freak, Carpenter Brut did a razor-sharp mix before taking it to Thibault Chaumont (Deviant Lab) for the master.
Scary Muzak, on one hand a homage to Carpenter’s themes – five out of twelve tracks are covers whereas the rest comes from the outer realms – and on the other zooming out on the aesthetics of the late ’70s and early ’80s popular culture. It is perhaps the Norwegians’ most hauntological moment, whirling up themes and moods, horrors and mysteries hidden in the foggy back alleys of your youth. Imagine the gloomy siblings of Les Humphries, Gert Wilden, and their respective orchestras, armed to their teeth with synths, pads, FX. Sometimes classy and chilling, other times amusingly smooth and sleazy, and at times outright beautiful in its suspense-filled vigour, Scary Muzak is an inspired, goblinesque addition to the ever-expanding Ulver catalogue. A CD that compiles everything this French band has released so far, namely the "Putrefiance" demo (2018) and the "Left to Decay" EP (2020). "Let's play Death Metal". That's how it all started by mid 2017, when two Death Metal freaks joined forces with a Crust/Punk drummer to summon the spirit of old school, raw 'n' rotten Death Metal with a Punk vibe, inspired by icons of yore such as Autopsy, Master, Repulsion and Obituary. In July 2018, they entered Cripple Room Studio and recorded 7 original songs, plus an Onslaught cover. It was a live recording. The engineer worked fast, and everything was mixed and mastered the following week. Shortly after, they decided to gain a little exposure by putting the demo on the web. Small labels reached out to them, asking for a repress of the demo, and some great reviews spawned here and there. November 2019 came, and they went back to Cripple Room Studio to record the "Left to Decay" EP. There was a label that was supposed to put it out, but it turned out to be a total disaster. The release was delayed again and again. On top of that, the pandemic arrived in 2020 and that meant no rehearsals and no gigs. So, more than a year after the recording, they decided to self-release the EP on tape (it would be repressed on pro-tape later on). Next step for Putrefiance to take will be to start the recording of a full-length that will also be released through Memento Mori by mid/late 2022.
The occultic and atmospheric solo project of Proscriptor McGovern (of ABSU fame) smears an avant-garde style of Pagan music with ‘The Venus Bellona’ – an invigorating and magic(k)al listen to reveal ‘the inner domains of immortality’. Awareness factor: the planet Venus is the sphere closest to the Earth and its longitude is based upon the actual epoch of time. With Venus’ perihelion passage, it is known for a fabulous role as an adulate goddess in Greek mythology. Venus also represents the alchemic(k)al metal of copper, (the fourth “Dalkhu” of fire) whereas “Bellona”, on the other hand, is the Latin term for “war goddess” to complete the bewilderment of the album title. Proscriptor comes to you with ‘The Venus Bellona’ – a collection of deathless fables gathered from a wide variety sources: from his ancestral attributions of Scottish heritage to superstitions and the Dominion folklore of Thoth. Handed down to his shadow from generation to generation, and once told in musky crofters’ cottages and draughty castles, these spellbinding tales of ‘The Venus Bellona’ will thrill and possess followers of all durations. Lightlessness of sound, which is sometimes motionless, is essential in occultic and atmospheric music.

Static Abyss’ debut studio album, ‘Labyrinth of Veins’, presents an unnerving, multi-layered eerie concoction of dirty doom and death, including themes exploring the echoes of insanity manifested through human existence. The result; a sinister onslaught of at times slow and bludgeoning brutal metal whilst at others whipped into a storm of chaotic vile hysterics. The spirit of Autopsy is at times present in the truly titanic riffs swathed in chilling atmospheric guitar leads, whilst Chris’ seemingly bottomless pit of morbid inspiration from the dark & twisted corners of life permeate the release with his highly distinguishable delivery to further the descent into madness.
