Black Metal.
Official Compact disk version of the Studio Live LPs on HMSS. Killer sound.
For years one of Finnish black metal's best-kept secrets, in recent times have FORGJORD sprung to prominence among the adventurous as practitioners of a strangely alluring sort of obsidian. Although existing since the mid '90s and patiently parceling out their recordings in an almost-clandestine manner, the upswing in activity began with FORGJORD's third album (and first with WEREWOLF), Uhripuu, in 2017 and was followed by the equally challenging Ilmestykset in 2019, the comparatively more rockin' Laulu kuolemasta a year later, and the draw-everything together Ruumissaarna Pt. 1 in 2022. Among those four full-lengths, the Finnish trio solidified and strengthened their strident aesthetic - malodorous melodicism, hypnotically rendered through a ripped-raw soundfield, making their strangely hummable ruminations on triumph & tragedy sound all the more alien, each album unified yet unique within that aesthetic - and made it all seem effortless. Finally, it seemed that the name FORGJORD was no longer a "secret."
RUTTOKOSMOS were one of the great "what if?"s of Finnish black metal. The band formed sometime in 2003 and released the five-song Ja minä näin kuoleman demo in 2006 and then the six-song Kärsimys demo a year later. Afterward, nothing was heard from RUTTOKOSMOS ever again. Only one member concurrently played in Divina Inferis, and the other two members either disappeared or played pseudonymously in other bands. In 2021, WEREWOLF compiled both demos onto one massive compilation, (re)introducing RUTTOKOSMOS to a newer generation starved for authentic mysticism in black metal, with the cryptic suggestion that a debut album may someday or decade arrive.

New England extreme metal powerhouse, Escuela Grind, will release its new LP, 'Dreams on Algorithms', on October 18 via MNRK Heavy. Recorded at Salem, Massachusetts' GodCity studio with producer Kurt Ballou, and mastered by Nick Townsend (Dr. Dre, Betty Davis) the record is the highly anticipated follow-up to Escuela Grind's celebrated 2022 full-length debut, 'Memory Theater', a recording hailed as "an opus of extremity" by The New York Times.Escuela Grind’s journey through the punishing sonic landscape of Grindcore has been anything but status quo. Their mantra of promoting inclusivity and acceptance within extreme music communities stands as a pillar of progression in an often gate-kept and closed-minded subculture. Vocalist Katerina Economou spreads the band’s spirit and core beliefs on every stage they touch – amplifying the voices of the underrepresented and connecting people on a level deeper than the music.Dreams on Algorithms is a sonic testament to the band’s ideologies – a bludgeoning display of progressive extreme metal that steps outside of genre boundaries.
Comdemned to Suffer was recorded in Croydon UK and mixed by London-based Tide Music Studios. This is our 3rd album, the most personal so far, as no guest musicians participated during recording and lyrics are more mature and complex, mostly reflecting different struggles that we’ve overcomed in the past 5 years as a band. In the melodic death metal genre, we like to add black metal elements to the mix as well to make the music sound a bit darker and intense. We’ve been influenced mostly by death metal pioneers from 90’s but there are also modern elements in our music. We were influenced by the bands like The Carcass, At the Gates and Dissection, so our music can be described as ‘similar’ to these bands with a pinch of modern elements on top. We put great emphasis on this album and worked really hard to make it sound profound and we believe this is the most mature album that we’ve released so far.
In the vein of AT THE GATES, DISSECTION & CARCASS
Little Weight is the follow up to 2022's Perfect Light and sees Patrick Walker take a different approach to writing and recording.
Whilst Perfect Light was written and recorded over a long time period, with a wide cast of musicians, for Little Weight Patrick was determined to simplify the record-making process and recapture more of the rawness and spontaneity of the band’s earliest recordings. Setting aside a designated amount of time, under specific - often isolated - conditions, the crafting of the songs that make up Little Weight took place.
A pre-planned series of retreats provided the space and opportunities to focus, within which Walker and his collaborators - drummer Andrew Prestidge and bassist Roland Scriver - were able to do their best work. Designated time to work without distraction allowed them absolute freedom to create, whilst deadlines added to the urgency of the final recordings captured at Holy Mountain Studios in London in December 2023. Engineering and mixing was undertaken by Chris Fullard (Sunn O))); IDLES; Ulver), who was assisted by Stanley Gravett, before Adam Gonsalves mastered the tracks in Portland, Oregon. The album's cover art is by Tekla Vály. Commenting on the writing process Walker says: “The conditions I created to make this record - without too much extraneous, unnecessary back and forth - means that what we recorded here have an added nearness to the first emotions that I first wanted to express and which inspired me to sit down to write; things often lost over time and usually difficult to recapture.”
Whilst he remains unwilling to be drawn to discussing the specifics of his songs, 40 Watt Sun has once again produced a collection of vignettes that are steeped in poetic beauty, longing, love, and melancholy nostalgia.
Comatose Music and Logic of Denial proudly presents the all new full length ‘Aftermath’. This is the third album by these Italian miscreants, further expanding the sonic exploration crafted in their previous 2013 effort ‘Atonement’ with a more diverse, brutal and complex approach. Conceived as a three chapter concept album about the various stages during the grieving process, ‘Aftermath’ contains twelve vicious tracks which conceptually probe the resentment consistent with the incessant and infamous vilification of human vulnerability. Fast and technical brutal death metal with guttural vocals and superb production.
Lóstregos was brought into the light in 2014 with the intention of promoting awareness and keeping alive the flame of Galician Folklore, its tales and the hidden knowledge that lies within them, all under the banner of black metal mixed with epic features with a intimate approach that drags the listener to landscapes where the ancient ones and their cult remains unbroken and pristine.
Their third record “Nai” features a mystic cover artwork by David Thierré. “Nai” is defined by the band as a singular point of balance between light and darkness. It’s an introspective and conceptual journey across the primordial elements led by the endless coil, without forgetting about the main focus of the band on Galician Folklore.
