(..) spunta dal nulla uno scatenato duo black metal dalla doppia nazionalità: olandese e canadese. è un black metal influenzato dalla scuola scandinava (quella norvegese in particolare) ed i brani seppur classici sono parecchio ispirati. Le carte vincenti che la band si gioca in questa primissima partita sono tante: si può partire elencando una produzione pulitissima, il phatos, che è parecchio diabolico e l’atmosfera a tratti diventa davvero avvolgente
I midtempo supportati da un riffing sempre graffiante sono il punto di forza su cui gli Asagraum si basano spesso e volentieri. il meglio arriva con la splendida "Carried By Lucifer’s Wings", canzone assolutamente trascinante che vi ricorderà sicuramente una delle storiche band della scena black metal norvegese degli Anni ’90

Herzogian Darkness is a shadowy plunge into strange, shapeshifting depths. The eerie quietness of the first couple of minutes of Children Of The Eye announces the coming storm, and the nine explosive, cathartic minutes of this opening song hold in themselves all the strikingly disparate emotions that we have come to expect from Amenra. Mass VI is an emotional rollercoaster until its very last second, until Diaken is abruptly ended at its very climax, as the last breath of an expiring life.

As the Masses amassed, it became clear Amenra was a serious contender within the post/sludge/doom genre. With this reissue of the long out of print debut we take a step back, and celebrate the album that started the procession now exactly a decade ago. "Mass I", rooted in the (post)hardcore and noise scene, reveals an ambitious outfit that are set to preach their distinctive blurring of genres and musical conventions. The original recordings' brilliance is finally revealed by Billy Anderson's (Eyehategod, Melvins, Neurosis, Swans) tremendous remastering. "Mass I" never sounded this full and powerful.
